The days may still be chilly, but winter has ended and we find ourselves fully in spring- the season of new. The season of growth, and cleaning and refreshing. And as we embark on our spring cleaning journey, it’s important to remember to check up on things behind the scenes as well- our plumbing. We have a few more things to jot down on your spring cleaning checklist.
Faucets
Spring is a great time to check up on and reset your faucets and sinks. Of course everything is going to get a good cleaning, so this is the perfect opportunity to check for leaks, drips, or pipe issues. This is also a great time to get out the drain snake and really clean all that gunk out. Replace the drain stop if needed, or even drain strainers. Giving your shower head a nice soak and deep clean will also help clear out any mineral deposits, and get you a stronger water pressure.
Toilets
This is the perfect opportunity to check on how your toilets are functioning. Your toilets can be leaking and you may not even know. Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank of your toilet and wait a few minutes. If your toilet is leaking, you’ll see that color make its way down to the bowl in no time. Check back every couple of minutes to see. If it isn’t there after half an hour you should be good.
Plumbing Appliances
Your water heater may quite possibly be the most important plumbing appliance in your home, and it often goes unthought of until something goes wrong. So why not check up on it now to help avoid those issues down the line. Your water heater really only lasts about 15 years or so, so after that it’s better to just get a new one. You can check the serial number to find out when yours was made, and if it was over 15 years, it may be time to change it out. If not, check and make sure it’s set to an appropriate temperature- nothing over 120 degrees.
Outdoor Plumbing
While getting the garden ready, it’s a good move to check on the outdoor plumbing as well. This includes wells, sump pumps, pipes, and hoses. Make sure to get your well water tested yearly, and this may be a good time to get that done, as well as any other maintenence it may need. You can test to make sure your sump pump is functioning correctly by pouring water into the sump pit. Check hoses for unemptied, frozen water, holes or tears, or general wear and tear. Ensure that the spicket it’s attached to is working well, and check any visible outdoor pipes for leaks.
