WHAT DOES A WELL PUMP DO?
A well pump’s job is to extract water from a water well so supply your home with the water required to run your shower, toilets, sinks, and other household appliances such as a dishwasher or washing machine. But where does the water in the water well come from? Aquafers, found under the Earth’s surface, collect rain water and other water flowing underground. When a well is bored into the Earth’s, the goal is to hit an aquafer that will be able to supply the water well with an adequate water supply. There are three different ways to boring a well- digging, drilling and driving. Each of these means of boring a well have a corresponding well pump system. And although the mean of boring is different, the function of the well pumps is similar.
HOW DOES A WELL PUMP WORK?
Most modern wells are drilled wells. They can be drilled as shallow as 10-60 feet, or up to 1,000 feet into the ground. Once the water source has been accessed, it now needs to be pumped out for use. There are several types of water pumps, such as Jet Pumps, which remain above ground, and Submersible Pumps, which go below ground. The water pump then pulls the water from the water well into a Pressure Tank, which is located inside your home. As water is used in your home, the pressure in the Pressure Tank will drop, and your water pump will then turn on to refill the pressure tank. This cycle continues as needed to maintain the water pressure in your home.
WHAT IS THE LIFE EXPECTANCY ON A WELL PUMP?
Life expectancies on well pumps vary based on several factors. How often your water pump has to run and the electrical supply to the well pump are a couple examples. The general life expectancy is approximately 10 years. For example, if your well pump is responsible for filling your pressure tank to accommodate a home that is simultaneously running a dishwasher, washing machine and several showers a day, the wear and tear on the well pump will be greater than the wear and tear on a pump that is only used to run a shower and a toilet. By using high efficiency appliances and limiting wasted waterflow, you can maximize the lifespan of your well pump.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR WELL PUMP IS BAD?
There are several indications your well pump is malfunctioning and should be examined by a professional. If your water has fluctuating pressure or your faucets are spitting, your well pump may not be supplying enough water to your pressure tank. Other indications your well pump may not be in proper working order include your pipes making strange noises when running water, scalding shower water and suddenly high electric bills.
