Imagine turning on the tap, expecting a clear stream to flow down, only to instead see rusty orange liquid falling from the spicket. This is the outcome of improper well maintenance. The most basic requirement of well maintenance is water treatment.
Without proper treatment, well water can become contaminated, look, smell and taste bad, or become hard. In order to keep your well water pristine, regular treatment is necessary.

Water Treatment 101
Water treatment units will take away the worry of a contaminated water supply. These systems are made up two different types of treatment: point of entry systems and point of use systems. They’re fairly self-explanatory. The point of entry system treats water as it enters your home, meaning water coming from every tap is treated. Point of use systems on the other hand, are attached to specific faucets in your home, meaning only the water coming out of faucets with systems attached will be treated.
From these two categories, quite a few different water treatment systems exist. Among them, the four most commonly used systems are:
Disinfection
A disinfection process is a process that involves killing off the microorganisms in the water supply. There’s a chemical disinfection or a physical disinfection process to choose from. The chemical process typically involves something like chlorine or ozone, while the physical process uses radiation, light, or heat.
Water Softeners
Water softeners are systems that simply remove the hardness from your water. Hard water can taste funny, or even look or smell funny, and can affect the health of your skin and hair. A water softener typically involves the replacement of hard magnesium ions with sodium or potassium.
Distillation Systems
A distillation system involves the process of water being boiled and collected, which ends up leaving the contaminants behind. It’s one of the simpler processes, quite similar to the old idea of boiling water in the wilderness before drinking it.
Filtration Systems
A filtration system can mean a lot of things, but mainly boils down to a system similar to a refillable water pitcher, where water is cleansed by going through a filter to remove the contaminants.
