Nothing is more frustrating than something not working correctly. And absolutely nothing is more frustrating than when that something is your water. Imagine how difficult life would become when you don’t have water flowing at the turn of a handle, or when your toilet suddenly can no longer flush. Being stuck without water can be a nightmare- something that you’d like to remedy as quickly as you can.
Maybe you’re having this problem right now, and if not, as a well owner, you’re sure to have it at some point. When you do find yourself in this kind of situation, stay calm, and read on.
Do You Have Power?
The first, and most likely most obvious, question is: do you have power? Well pumps operate on electricity, so if your home is without power, that means your well is too. It’s always good to consider a backup generator for things like this. Or, if you know that you may lose power beforehand, it’s good to prepare by filling up your tub or some buckets to tie you over until the power is back.
If it isn’t the power, move onto the filtration system. This is a very unexpected, yet very common cause of this issue. It may be that the filter is clogged or that the filter system has simply failed. Check out your filtration system, look for anything out of the ordinary there, and put the system into bypass to try to remedy the situation.
Check Your Water Usage
If you still see no water, it may be your water usage that’s the issue. Your well can only produce so much water at a time. If you used an out of the ordinary amount of water recently, that may be the problem. Think back on the last few days and on your water usage. If you suddenly remember that your son left the house running for half the day yesterday, then your well probably just needs time to fill itself back up. Shut off your well breaker and give it some time to recoup.
If none of these seems to be the reason, the problem may be from the weather. If you’ve had a bad storm recently it’s unlikely, but possible, that your well was struck by lightning, or was a casualty in a power surge. Either way, you’ll need to call in a well technician to resolve the issue.
