The key to having a smooth year with your plumbing is maintenance. As with most things, taking the time to care for your plumbing and give it a little bit of your love will help to ensure that everything is in working order, and can help to prevent plumbing issues from popping up as your year continues. But to kick off the new year, what can you do to help keep your plumbing running smoothly?
Get The Tools
Especially if you’re a new home owner, or someone just starting out on their own, it’s great to go out and buy a few simple plumbing necessities that will help make your life easier down the road. You can really buy as much or as little here as you want, but generally it’s good to have a plunger, a wrench, a bucket, and some pliers. Having the tools on hand now can save you time and money down the road by being able to DIY simple plumbing problems. Along with the tools, you also need some knowledge, so learning a little bit about how your plumbing system works would be a great idea. And, in the end, don’t be scared to call the pros if turns out that DIYing it just isn’t your thing.
Clear the Drains
A great tip to keep drains from clogging is regular cleanings. There are tons of different things that people do to get their drains free of muck, but the best way is really the simplest. Take a pot of boiling water and simply pour it down the drain. If you have a garbage disposal, running it while pouring the water will work just the same. This helps to clear out any food, or hair, or debris that have found their way into your pipes. A lot of products on the market that are meant for cleaning out pipes can actually end up doing more harm than good, so we find the best way here is just some old-fashioned water.
Take a Look
At the start of the new year, it’s a great idea to take a look around your house and make note of anything that looks like it may be an issue. This can apply to anything home care related really, but especially your plumbing. Take note of any faucets that may be leaking, or puddles of water where they shouldn’t be. Check and make sure your toilets are all running correctly, and that your hot water heater is still hot water heating. Now is a great time to make a list of anything that oyu want to fix in the new year, and you can consider what investments to make into your plumbing system for the year. Is it time to install a water softener? What about new faucets? If you want to go big you could even replace old pipes. Being aware of the things in your home that need to get done is a good way to stay accountable throughout the year.
To 2022, happy new year, and happy plumbing care!
