How to Prepare your Well for Cold Weather

Although we’re only halfway through November, snowy days and bitter cold nights are much closer than you may think. As a well owner, this approaching weather means that a little bit of prep work is in your near future to keep your water supply safe and serving you.

 Winter Well Maintenace

As important as regular well maintenance is to the health of your well, winter well maintenance is even more so important. Regular owner inspection is what is super useful in the winter. Whenever you go to do your regular well maintenance simply take an extra few minutes to inspect the well cap and casing, making sure that they’re intact and snug. Look at the land around the well too, and make sure that everything is still sloping away from your well and that everything is clean.

Pipe Prep

The most common well/water issue for homeowners in the winter is pipe problems. With cold winter weather brings the danger of frozen or blocked pipes, which can be an extremely frustrating issue to deal with. The best thing you can do to help your pipes get through the cold is to insulate them. You can buy insulation for this, or hire a pro to get it done, or you can DIY it with old blankets and sweaters (although this may not be the most effective method). If you’ve found yourself in the situation of your pipes already being frozen, no worries, there are some remedies to get your water back. Basically, you just need to unfreeze the pipes. So be it a hair dryer, a heat lamp, a candle, whatever, just thaw out your pipes. Be ready to insulate them afterwards to prevent the problem from arising again.

Frozen Wells

Wells and well pumps are typically installed deep in the ground, away from the level of freeze. However, stranger things have happened than a frozen well, and if you have a particularly uncommon bit of cold weather in your area it is possible for your well water to freeze up. This is where the pros come in however, and it’s best that you give your local plumber or well consultant a call to help your remedy the problem.
