We won’t be stuck inside our houses forever, even though it may seem that way. Sooner or later, we’re all going to be back to traveling and taking a trip away from our homes- something much farther and longer than the trip to the grocery store and back. For when that time comes, there’s a few important things that we should keep in mind to prevent plumbing tragedies.
Check out our top 4 away from home plumbing tips to keep in mind!
Plumbing Tip #1: Shut it Off
If your trip involves being away from home for more than a day or two, the best thing you can do is simply shut it off. What do we mean by that? Find your main water valve and shut off the water supply to your home. We also recommend turning off your water heater, since you won’t want that to run if your water supply is off. Doing this saves you money and eliminates the worry of something malfunctioning while you’re away. This means when you’re on your trip to relax this will help you to actually relax.
Plumbing Tip #2: Check it Out
Something that should definitely be on your “Before I leave” checklist is checking out your faucets and water supplies. Go around your house for a few minutes and check out your water supplies. This means, sinks, showers, tubs, toilets, hoses- if water comes out of it, give it a check. Make sure nothing is leaking, and everything is in perfect working condition. The last thing you’d want is to leave with a dripping faucet and return to a flooded house. Trust us, it’s worth it to take the little time out of your day to reassure you that everything is working fine.
Plumbing Tip #3: Clean!
Something so simple that many people forget to do is clean! It’s not only nice to return to a clean house, but if you’re going to be gone for more than a few days it’s best to clean to prevent unwanted mold growth, smells, or damage in your home. Clean your bathroom from top to bottom- especially the toilet. Also be sure to clean your gutters in case of a storm. If you really want to go all out, you can clean out your fridge and garbage disposal as well to prevent unfortunate smells in those areas.
Plumbing Tip #4: Prep
Last but not least: Prep. The best thing you can do is arrange for someone to come check out your house while you’re away. Ask a neighbor, friend, or family member to come by every other day to check up on things and make sure everything is as it should be. If you have pets and arranged for someone to look after them simply ask them to look around for anything out of place when they go in. Look up plumbers in your area and keep their number in mind for if anything does pop up (we’ve heard 570-992-0447 is a good one to call).
